JEWELLERY CARE & MAINTENANCE
There are many benefits to taking proper care of your jewellery. Taking the time to look after your gold chains and rings means you can be confident and you are always looking your best, whether you are wearing a treasured gift or showing off your favourite everyday accessories.
To help you keep the shine on your best jewellery, we have put together our top tips for caring for your gold pendants, chains, necklaces and rings.
How to Store Your Jewellery
The most important thing to bear in mind when caring for your jewellery is making sure it is stored correctly, so think carefully about how and where you will keep it.
Ideally you should store each piece in its own box or compartment. If you keep several gold rings or other pieces of jewellery together, you run the risk of them coming into close contact. If this happens, it can easily lead to your precious belongings being scratched or worn down.
If your jewellery came in its own case, that will almost always be the best place to store it. However, if any of your jewellery does not have its own case, we recommend using a fabric-lined box that is clean and in good condition.
To keep your jewellery in the best condition, make sure it is stored somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. Ideally you want to find a place to keep it that won’t get too hot or cold, perhaps in a secure set of drawers.
How to Clean Jewellery
When it comes to taking good care of your jewellery from day to day, there are several safe and simple methods you can use. One of the most important things to remember is not to put too much pressure on pieces of jewellery and not to use abrasive materials when cleaning them.
Using harsh materials could easily lead to scratching or damaging your favourite necklace or chain, so stick to using a little water if you need to clean your jewellery from time to time. If you find it needs something a little extra to get it clean, you could try using a delicate soap, but remember to only ever use soft and gentle materials when you do so. Be extra careful with antique jewellery and consult an expert if you have any doubts whatsoever.
It can be worth finding a professional cleaning company with a good reputation and having your jewellery given a thorough clean, perhaps once every 12 months. If in doubt, you could always contact a trusted jeweller for advice on the best way to clean your individual pieces and ask them if they recommend a cleaner. Here at Emas Anuar, we have our own workshop on site and can advise on any cleaning or repair work your jewellery may need.
Taking Care While Wearing Gold Jewellery
There are some obvious things to bear in mind when it comes to protecting your jewellery from day-to-day damage, while others may be a little more surprising.
One important tip to remember is you should always put on your jewellery last when getting dressed. That includes putting on aftershave, perfume, hair products or make-up beforehand, as they can all damage your jewellery.
When it comes to keeping your jewellery safe around the house, we advise you to take it off before doing any manual jobs or housework. You do not want to accidentally scuff or scratch a ring or bracelet doing some run-of-the-mill household chores.
One last tip — what’s good for you often isn’t good for your gold jewellery. It’s best to take it off before washing your hands or taking a bath or shower, as you don’t want to submerge it in water or expose it to products like shower gel and shampoo.
